small animals like Bushbaby and the endangered Wild Dog are just some
examples.
Let Mal d’Africa guide you through verdant subtropical forests, deserts,
mountains, and endless unspoiled beaches.
Come to visit Cape Town. Perched between the ocean and Table Mountain,
this city guarantees endless things to do, place to see and people to
meet. Taste some of the world’s finest wines, drive along the breathtaking

Then make your way to Jo’burg, the City of Gold. Here the pace is much
faster, with a truly cosmopolitan life. Sandton forms the fashion and
financial hub of South Africa with restaurants for the most discerning
palates.
For the more athletic, test yourselves with the world famous Comrades

People are the biggest asset of South Africa; a rainbow nation with rich
and diverse cultures, a mix of third and first world. Often called the
cradle of humankind, for this is where archaeologists discovered Miss.
Place, a 2,5-million-year-old fossils of our earliest ancestors.
South Africa is a nation of 44.8 million people of diverse origins, cultures,
languages and beliefs.
By far 79,% of the population classified itself as African but it is not
culturally and linguistically homogenous. Nine of the 11 official languages
are African: Sesotho sa Leboa, Sesotho, Setswana, SiSwati, Tshivenda,
Xitsonga, isiNdebele, isiXhosa and isiZulu, reflecting a variety of
tribal groups, which nevertheless have a great deal in common in terms
of background, culture and descent.
The white population, about 9.6% descends mainly from the colonial
immigrants of the late 17th, 18th and 19th centuries - Dutch, German,
French Huguenot and British. Linguistically it is divided into Afrikaans
and English-speaking groups.
The coloured population covers 8.9%. They descend from slaves brought in
from the East and central Africa and the indigenous Khoesan who lived in
the Cape at the time.
Khoesan, the original inhabitants of South Africa is a term used to
describe two separate groups, physically similar they were light-skinned
and small in stature. The Khoe, who were called Hottentots by the Europeans,
were pastoralists and were effectively annihilated; the San, called Bushmen
by the Europeans, were hunter-gatherers. A small, impoverished San
population survive in the Kalahari desert and in the north Est of Namibia.
The major part of the Asian population, 2.5% is Indian in origin, many of
them descend from workers brought in the 19th century to work on the sugar
plantations of Natal. They are largely English-speaking.
There is also a significant group of Chinese South Africans.
Believers are represented by 4 main religious entities such as Christianity,
mainly Protestant, Islam, Hinduism and Judaism.
The Republic of South Africa occupies the southernmost part of the African
continent.
Its surface area is 1 219 090 km². It has common boundaries with the republics
of Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe, while the Republic of Mozambique and the
Kingdom of Swaziland lie to the north-east. Completely enclosed by South
African territory in the south-east is the mountain Kingdom of Lesotho.
To the west, south and east, South Africa borders on the Atlantic and Indian
oceans for 2 500km. Isolated, 1 920 km southeast of Cape Town in the Atlantic,
lie Prince Edward and Marion islands, annexed by South Africa in 1947.
The Cape floral kingdom contains roughly 3% of the world's plant species - at
about 456 species per 1 000 km2 and about 70% are endemic, it occur nowhere
else on earth.
The area’s freshwater and marine environments are similarly unique, with
plants and animals adapted to highly specialized environments.
When it comes to fauna, the kingdom boasts 11 000 marine animal species,
3 500 of which are endemic, and 560 vertebrate species, including 142 reptile
species of which 27 are endemic.
The legislative capital is Cape Town, the administrative capital is Pretoria,
and the biggest city is Johannesburg. A good rail and road system links all
major centres.
