Uganda
Uganda is undoubtedly the Pearl of Africa!
The first touristic attraction is the endangered mountain gorilla. Only
720 individuals survive on earth, living in the lushes Bwindi Impenetrable
National Park and in the Virunga Mountains. A close encounter with these
amazing creatures is one of the most emotional wildlife experiences that
you can possibly have.
In Uganda there are five habituated gorilla groups. Each gorilla group is
visited for only one hour a day by 6 people accompanied by rangers. Due to
the very limited and controlled number of visitors, the permit must be
purchased months in advance.
Also other primates are exceptionally well represented in Uganda.
Uganda is infact home of the man’s closest relative, the chimpanzee. You
can see them at Kibale Forest, Budongo Forest and Queen Elizabeth National
Park’s Kyambura Gorge. A community of orphaned chimps can be visited on
Ngamba Island on Lake Victoria.
The rare Golden Monkey can be observed at Mgahinga National Park as well
Black and White Colobus, Red Colobus and Blue Monkeys.
Uganda is the most complete bird watching destination of Africa with more
than 1,000 species recorded.
Bwindi National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park that alone has got a
checklist of 606 species, Semliki National Park, Mabamba Swamp near
Entebbe where you can see the elusive Shoebill, Kibale Forest and Murchison
Falls National Park are the place where Mal d’Africa will take you for an
amazing birding experience.
You can enjoy big game viewing, visiting the Queen Elisabeth National
Park. The wide bio-diversity of habitats of this park offer an astonishing
number of species - almost 100 types of mammals including the rare
sitatunga can be spotted here.
This wonderful national park is particularly scenic with two lakes
connected by a channel, with many volcanic craters, grassy plains,
spectacular Candelabra Euphorbia trees and tropical forests. The main
lodge is also beautifully positioned and offers a panoramic view over
the Kasinga Channel.
Uganda offers not only wild life but one of the finest trekking in the
world and in our opinion definitely the best in Africa. Rwenzori mountain
range is a great challenge for mountaineers and trekking lovers. Trekking
in the Rwenzori National Park you will feel as being in a superb botanical
garden, with snow-capped peaks that will appear to you every time you turn
in a new valley.
Once reached Margherita’ summit, the highest of the range, you can see
Congo from one side and the whole of Uganda from the other!
It’s an amazing experience be on a glacier at 5106 m asl and at the same
time almost on the equator line.
Water is abundant in Uganda: Murchison falls are impressive more for their
power rather than size. The Nile River flowing course is interrupted by a
narrow fissure, which forces the river through a gap just 7 meters wide. .
Then the river spirals through another small gap to fall down 36 meters
in a foaming torrent creating a very spectacular sight.
Bunyonyi is another idyllic place and it’s also the starting point for an
adventurous Nile river rafting.
Uganda is a landlocked country, bordered by Sudan on the North, DRC on the
west, Rwanda and Tanzania on the South, and Kenya on the East.
Much of the country lies between the lakes of Africa and receives abundant
rainfall which is the main reason of the extremely diverse vegetation of
Uganda.
The temperature is pleasant, from about 16° to 25° C in the south to
25°-30° C in the north with an excursion of about 8° - 10° during the night,
especially in the Lake Victoria region.
The rainy seasons, usually begin in April and again in October. Little rain
falls in June and December.
The dry season goes from December to February and from June to September.
This is the best period for gorilla trekking and mountain climbing.
During the dry season you could have occasional thunderstorm.
Health precautions
Uganda is a malaria area and is advised to take prophylaxis. Yellow fever
prophylaxis is compulsory.
