South Africa self drive
(16 Days)
Self drive safaris gives you the freedom and independence to explore this
beautiful country at your own rhythm. Mal d’Africa chooses for you the most
scenic route, great National Parks, good and affordable accommodation. You will
visit the waterfalls and panoramic routes, private game reserves with a huge
variety and density of wildlife, St. Lucia world heritage site, the Garden
Route till the vibrant Cape Town.
Day 1 Johannesburg
On arrival at Johannesburg International Airport, you will be welcomed by a Mal
d’Africa Representative, and assisted at the car rental counter to collect your
vehicle.
Departure for Sandton, Johannesburg financial hub. After recover from your
flight you could option for a tour to Soweto. This famous township is teeming
with history of the apartheid's struggle, museums and friendly people. You will
have a meal at the poplar Wendi's restaurant with its African cuisine.

Day 2 Mpumalanga
Make your way to Sabie where you will overnight in a cosy typical guest house.
En route stop at Dullstroom for lunch.
Once in Sabie, you could visit some of the many waterfalls as Lone Creek,
Bridal Veil, Mac Mac and Forest falls. Explore Pilgrim’s Rest, built during the
gold rush at the end of the 19th century and declared National Monument or just
relax at Mac Mac pools.

Day 3 Mpumalanga – Private Game Reserve
Today you will proceed to the north-eastern part of Mpumalanga. We advice you
to visit: God’s Window, a beautiful rain forest situated at 1730 m asl, the
spectacular Lisbon and Berlin falls. Don’t miss Bourke's Luck Potholes, famous
for the particular erosion made by the water end the magnificent Blade River
Canyon. This is a truly South African wonder.
Enjoy a scenic route through tropical fruit plantations after which the
landscape change predominantly to bush felt. After entering the Private Game
Reserve at Timbavati Gate, continue and follow the directions to your exclusive
bush lodge. Enjoy a short rest before departing on the afternoon game drive in
open safari vehicle, accompanied by expert rangers and trackers. After a sun
downer you will return to the lodge for a dinner in the boma.

Day 4 Private Game Reserve
An early rise for coffee’ and departure then after for a game drive in this
area that offers a wide variety of wildlife. At this time of the day the
animals are more active and the possibilities to see them in action are bigger.
Brunch at the lodge and time to relax at the swimming pool in company of a good
book or bird watching before leaving for the afternoon game drive. Sun downer
in the bush and dinner at the lodge. You will share the emotions and
experiences of the day with the other guests at the lodge sipping exquisite
South African wine around a bond fire!

Day 5 Private Game Reserve - Swaziland
You will enjoy another game drive before leading to Hlane National Park, in
Swaziland. The landscape will change drastically with sugar cane plantation
everywhere and the Lebombo and Ubombo mountains range.
At your arrival you could have a game drive with your vehicle to discover the
resident fauna or just relax in the boma around the fire.

Day 6 7 Swaziland - St. Lucia Wetland Park
Before leaving, we strongly advice to have a walking safari accompanied by
experienced rangers. The very close encounter with rhinoceros and giraffes it’s
a unique experience!
Departure for the magnificent St. Lucia Wetland Park: a world heritage site.
The activities here are many: You could have a boat trip on the lake to see
some of the 800 hippos, and 1200 crocodiles natural residents. The birdlife is
also stunning, Goliath Heron, Pied Kingfisher, Knysna Lourie, African Fish
Eagle, Crested Eagle are often seen here. Explore the St. Lucia Wetland Park,
Mission Rock, snorkelling at Cape Vidal or walk on one of the longest beach
existing. You can also have another day of safari in the close Hluhluwe
National Park, set aside for rhinoceros protection in 1895 and today home of
the Big 5.

Day 8 St. Lucia Wetland Park – Durban
Today you will move to Durban. Time to visit the city, or have the Oriental
walkabout tour to experience the mysticism and vitality of the east!
Durban offers as well some of the best Oriental/Indian restaurant in South
Africa.

Day 9, 10 & 11 Durban - Knysna
Drop off the car at Durban’s Airport and departure for Port Elizabeth where you
will collect another car. Your accommodation is settled in a beautiful
indigenous forest close to Knysna lagoon. Explore this beautiful town, the
Knysna Heads, the Featherbed Nature Reserve. Knysna’s forest offers easy and
pleasant hikes and bikes trail. Arts and craft shops are found down town as
well as good restaurant which offer to the connoisseurs an outstanding quality
of oysters.
We advice you to explore Robberg Nature Reserve and the Tsitsikamma National
Park where you can experience the beautiful waterfall walk. Enjoy the view of
Storm River mouth with its spectacular bridge.
If you still have a bit of time, visit Nature’s Valley and explore by canoeing
Groot River Lagoon.

Day 12 Knysna – Hermanus
Let’s go to Hermanus, the whales’ capital. During the winter the Southern Right
whales migrate from their Arctic feeding grounds to the coast off the south
western Cape to mate and calve in the warm water of the Indian Ocean.
You can admire them easily from the shore or have a very close encounter with a
boat trip.

Day 13 14 15 Hermanus – Cape Town
Departure for Cape Town. After settle in your room in a hotel at A&V
Waterfront, you can explore the surrounding and if the weather is good, reach
the top of the Table Mountain with a cable car or walking along one of the many
trails to enjoy the sunset and the view from the summit. Places of interest in
Cape Town are endless: the African Museum, the picturesque Malaysian area, the
word famous Kirstenbosh botanical garden, to name a few. Explore the Cape
Peninsula driving along the Chapman’s Peak, one of the most scenic routes.
Enter the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve where you can see more then 1100
species of fynbos plants, including 25 protea and an astonishing 52 orchid
species. Coming back, stop at Simon’s Town to visit Boulders Beach and its
jackass penguin colony.
Enjoy a full day’s visit of Stellenbosh. The city is characterized by original
Cape Dutch buildings. Visit a diamond laboratory and some of the most famous
wine cellars of South Africa.
Make your evening special by choosing between original restaurants and trendy
cafés.

Day 16 Cape Town
Transfer to the airport to catch your flight back home.
